280 miles

8.8 miles per gallon!

Hitched up the night before, so it was a quick getaway.  Cherrie made coffee for the thermos while I raised the stabilizers.  We stopped at the dump station on the way out of the park and were on the road by 7:10.

The plan was to head east from Portland to stop and have a look at Oregon's #1 tourist attraction: Multnomah Falls.  (I know, I'd never heard of it either, but a friend highly recommended checking it out.)  We were a few miles from the turnoff when I read a big sign on the freeway: "Multnomah Falls Offramp Closed.  Parking lot full."  Okay, plan B.  Reset the GPS to head straight for the campground where we have reservations.

It's a beautiful campground.  Only 12 sites and they're full hook up!  Although the location of the sewer pipe is rather strange.  Most of them ore on the wrong side, and all of them are at the back of the campsite.  We won't be able to use it because we only brought one hose.  We're here for 3 nights, so I go ahead and hook the water hose up, set up the BBQ, etc, etc.  I take Rufus for a bike ride, and on the way back the campground host stops me and says that the campground is being evacuated because one of the fires is less than 5 miles away!  It is safe to spend the night, but we must depart in the morning. Grrrr.  So I unhooked the water line and filled up the fresh water tank in anticipation of a week or so of dispersed camping.
